Pesto is a favourite in many homes. And with good reason! A creamy, delicious herb pesto tastes great with bread, as dip for veggies or to spice up a simple pasta dish. But have you ever tried making your own? With a homemade pesto you get a whole different taste and colour – almost like it is a different product! It is incredibly easy to make, and your guests will love it!
Impress your guests with a homemade pesto
The basic ingredients of a pesto are herbs, oil, parmesan and pine nuts. However, one of the benefits of making it yourself is that you can choose quality ingredients, such as cold-pressed olive oil, whereas the pesto you buy at supermarkets are often made using cheaper oils. Also, you are free to try out different ingredients as you like. Instead of pine nuts, for instance, you can try hazelnuts for a stronger flavour, or almonds which gives the pesto a sweet flavour.
Basically any fresh, green herb can be used in a pesto. Among the most popular ones are basil, parsley and rucola, but if you want to experiment a bit, try out thyme, tarragon or dill.
Here’s how you do it
Making your own pesto is really simple and takes no more than ten minutes:
- Combine your choice of fresh herbs and toasted nuts with parmesan, a good olive oil and perhaps a few cloves of garlic.
- Put it all in a bowl or a food processor, and blend it until the pesto has a nice, creamy texture.
- Season with sea salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice as you like.
That’s it! You can use the pesto right away, or freeze and save it for a special occasion.
Easy, delicious and filled with vitamins!
