With basil meaning “royal”, the herb is one of the most commonly used herbs. The royal herb is particularly popular in the Italian kitchen, where it adds a terrific flavour to pasta dishes, chicken, sauces and dressings.

Origins

The plant originates from India and has been known in Europe since the 12th century.

Basil was known as an aphrodisiac and was supposed to soothe headaches or colic.

The plant repels mosquitoes and flies and soothes insect bites. Extracts from the plant stimulates the digestion and has antibacterial effects.
